Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline.  In each of the 5 towns, colorful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces, harbors are filled with fishing boats and trattorias turn out seafood specialities along with the Liguria region’s famous sauce, pesto.  The Sentiero Azzurro cliffside hiking trail links the villages and offers sweeping sea vistas.

Our first exposure to Vernazza was a small blurb in Conde Nast Traveler (a magazine addiction in my home).  We took one look and thought “I want that…..”  the planning began.

It all started with this small photo of a “room with a view” in Vernazza

This charming clocktower has bells that go off hourly beginning at 6 am…Good Morning Vernazza!!

A grotto in the middle of town…
A little stone building with altar and votives…my Catholic education cropping up here……..all that wine…..lighting all votives as a proactive measure!

Just to the left of the building you can see one of many cantilevered vineyards on the hillside….
Many of these hotels were converted from larger Villas into apartments or hotel rooms….this is a pic of the lobby as we checked in!!!!!
Laundry, as you may have noticed is a very public thing….the Italians literally hang their “dirty” laundry for all to see….heehee!
Part of our view…these colorful umbrellas shade people having lunch at this trattoria.
The money shot……View from our room. As snapped in Conde Nast Magazine
The sunsets were beautiful…
Almost forgot to mention the local wines….magnificent! This was a favorite.
Good Night Vernazza.

Next up….Monterosso al Mare…dinner and Limencello at spots suggested by friends!

xoxo, Rosanna
