I’ve been blogging and doing video posts and Podcasts (iTunes) for a little while now and I am aware (even more) of how critical women are of the way they look, and it makes me sweat: “I have my Mother’s hands, my neck is pleated, my butt is headed South.” Reality is, it is “coma inducing” trying to keep up with those ten years younger. The extreme pressure put on women to look GREAT.EVER.SINGLE.DAY.  in movies, magazines, and quite frankly, sometimes the people we hang with —is absurd, unrealistic, and yes, unhealthy. You can opt out. Tune out the unsolicited edits. Fire the inner critic.  I am also aware it’s incredibly difficult to do!

Far be it from me to say we shouldn’t do our absolute BEST to look and feel amazing; as you may have guessed, I think we absolutely should. I think our best means observing, loving what we have, where we are. Sixty is not the new forty.  Sixty is sixty. Sure, I’ll be the best sixty I can be, but by no means do I ever want to be thirty again. I’m going to treasure sixty and all its benefits. That means staying fit and sharp, eating well, taking care of my skin, staying curious, reading, and learning from wise friends. That means loving your number (50,60,70…) and the wisdom that comes with it—and that is fabulous.

If I was on a desert island with my family, my children, and my very closest friends, what would I do? Would I spend time agonizing that my neck is not as svelte as it once was? Would I obsess over my thighs?  Ummm, I don’t think so! These people love me for who I am, they don’t care if my forehead is creased.

Take This Test:   take a look at the people that surround you.

I’ve read that the five people you spend the most time with are a reflection of the person you are. Who are your five? Do they care if your hair is long or short, if your butt is slightly lower than it was before? Or do they love you for you? If you find those around you cannot see you for the fabulous, perfect person you are, if they cannot see more than your “surface”, reconsider those relationships. Is that a HUGE move? Yes. Is it a healthy idea? Yes. Make this year about taking care of YOU. Surround yourself with people who make you smile!

I know I have good days and bad days. And, there are moments I don’t practice what I preach. Human here! But this blogging with feedback and interaction is holding me accountable. On my not-so-great days, I re-assess.  Am I eating well, am I sleeping, am I learning? I close my eyes and take a deep breath, maybe get some fresh air, and begin again.  Surround yourself with those who want the best for you—the real you—the rest takes care of itself.
