YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YA WANT…….”OH YES YOU CAN!”

MISSY K AT THE CHOP HOUSE … GETTING EXACTLY WHAT SHE WANTS!

Of course, there is a story to go with this photo……you just knew it, right?! So, Thursday through Saturdays in Lionshead Phil (supreme ruler and owner of The Chop House) performs in front of a “standing room only” crowd. Missy K has been learning the fine art of “apres ski” here since the time she began skiing (she was on skis at 3 1/2). She requests Mick Jagger’s “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and when she gets the signal from Phil responds loudly “oh yes you can!”. She is almost as delighted with this game as she is with her trips to Phil’s kitchen where she is allowed to design her own hot fudge sundae. As a Nana, it’s the most fun thing to watch.

It’s easy to know what you want. Maybe a little harder to get it. Or is it really? I think it’s more black and white than you imagine. After years of caring for your family and household, it’s finally your turn! Want to do something different during this phase of your life? Explore a passion you’ve kept under wraps while raising your kiddos? All you have to do is develop a few simple skills in order to have it all…..just the way you want it.

ASK.

Ask and be specific. Sounds obvious, right? And yet, we sometimes expect to get what we want without being crystal clear about what it is. You cannot expect others to read your mind. Figure out EXACTLY what you want, and ask for it clearly and confidently. No beating around the bush….it will only cause confusion AND frustration.

If you want to travel, write down your destination and list what it will take to get it done. Be specific. It really does work.

DON’T BE SORRY.

It is sometimes a bit awkward to ask for something you want. Especially if you’ve not done it before. Or, you are so accustomed to taking your place behind your children’s needs and wants. Even harder to stand your ground which often results in apologizing. You may even start off with “I’m so sorry to ask, but…” or follow with “If not, no biggie.” Do not feel you are being impolite. Apologizing for you want comes across as lacking in confidence. Don’t give in…be strong! There is NOTHING to apologize for….

THEY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT YOU.

Everyone wants to be valued and irreplaceable, so make it happen. If you are the “crown jewel” in your company, not only will they want you to stay….they want you happy! Be visible…be productive and be positive. So much easier to ask for whatever you want when your accomplishments speak for themselves.

NEVER. STOP. DREAMING.

Be persistant. Unfortunately, not every want is achieved right away. Wouldn’t that be great if it was???!!!! Like riding a Unicorn around every day drinking Champagne.

Don’t give in….even it you’ve been given a “no” 30 times, it doesn’t mean you should forget it and move on. If the front door is closed….sneak around to the back door.

Don’t forget….complaining or whining is not a strategy, so get going. Use these tips to be heard. They will ensure that you are in a great position to get your wish.

Remember, you have the most important component of success….experience. Do something that makes you smile! You deserve it.

WHAT TECHNIQUES HAVE YOU USED TO NEGOTIATE OR ASK FOR SOMETHING YOU WANTED? HAVE YOU USED ANY OF THESE IDEAS? WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME?

I’D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR STORY.

    Domingo,
I guess it really depends on what you do on the web, but, if it is to find helpful information, there is no better way!
