My first sip of this magical potion came in 1967. I was 12 and our family was having dinner at a favorite restaurant ( spot on repeat with my tribe weekly until Jean-Jacque finally closed in the 80’s). My dad LOVED, LOVED, LOVED “magic bubble water” and that is exactly how I referred to it for as long as I can remember. His favorite quote on Champagne was :
“Come quickly, I am drinking the stars…” by Dom Perignon
It was SO exciting sitting at the table hearing the cork pop…..it felt as though confetti would drop. I was wearing a little number from our Spring shopping trip taken with my dad at the Pink Petticoat. Very chic and glamorous. The waiter took my glass to the bar and created his magic. A sugar cube soaked in Angostura Bitters (gives it the rich, red coloring) in the bottom of the glass. Champagne is poured over it….garnish with a pretty curl of lemon or orange. You can use DP or, use Prosecco (introduced a couple of years ago to this sparkly heaven by The Good Doctor – it’s an Italian thing sooooo…..) Almost illegally DELISH!
It seemed to me that ALL good things were accompanied by this elixer AND I truly believe that an icy cold glass of Champagne can cure just about anything.
As I got older my love of bubbles remained. I grew up in Southern California and was on the beach in very little clothing for three months every.single.year. I distinctly recall lying on my bed and using a wire hanger to zip my designer jeans up! The time had arrived to start paying attention to my nutrition. Not only to look good in those suits but for good health and high energy. So…..when I asked a pal if we could diet and still drink……she said “yes, just drink Champagne…”. Today she is a dermatologist so I consider this advice MEDICAL.
With just under 100 calories in a flute of bubbly, it seemed like the perfect addition to my Happy Hours (or Happy Days / Weeks / years), and much healthier than sugar-laden cosmos and bloaty beer. And, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to drink champagne? It was love at first sip (or guzzle). Couple that with the fact that I felt like a glam gal while drinking it and immediately, I was sold.
Unfortunately, champagne wouldn’t suffice for daily meals (wouldn’t that be fun?) so I started following a diet full of fresh veggies, delicious fruits, lean proteins and whole grains. Exercise was an organic sort of thing….we were at the beach all summer so tennis, running, swimming and horseback riding were the norm. We didn’t really think about it as “working out”. We each had friends from school down during the summer for weeks at a time so our exercise was a super fun accident. When I had my children, I began to view my gym time as “Me Time” and suddenly exercise became just as beneficial for my brain as it did my body. At 63, my gym or run time is my private “zone” time….phone off….no talking….just sweating. And, it keeps me skiing 50 days a season AND injury free. Dessert, of course, would come in the form of a flute (or two) of bubbly.
And just like that, The Champagne Cure was born.
Although I tried some pretty crazy diet plans (story later about diet pills that came in a plain brown box from a “doctor” on a private island…. they were later exposed on 60 MINUTES), my newfound obsession for all things sparkling was established. And it was more than the 100 calories per glass that got me hooked on bubbles. I noticed how I felt when partaking…..glamorous and slightly giddy. Next time you have bubbles in a group, look around….can you find an unhappy face?!) I squared my shoulders and stood taller at the bar when I had my hand wrapped around a delicate flute of bubbly. Champagne made me feel beautiful, luxurious and sexy; things I didn’t immediately identify when younger. They say you are what you eat. I agree. Bubbles just make you feel better. Just try it and let me know if you feel UNSTOPPABLE. In every area of your life!
