Ok, it’s now the END of Summer…have you implemented your scheduling and planning routines yet? I know, it sounds SO limiting….like SO much work…and, what if you want to just “freestyle” and do what you want when you want to do it? I hear ya. I’ve always been a teeny bit of a freak show about calendaring things but…..I’ve also been known to “let it ride…” every once in a while.

But, the funny thing about scheduling and planning your time is….it really (HONEST) does free up more time in your day. By having things you must get done on the calendar, you get them done and don’t have to think about that item anymore. I know…if ya don’t plan/schedule….no disappointment, right? Dead wrong…..

SCHEDULING TAKES THE PANIC BUTTON OFF THE TABLE.

Planning your time clearly will remove the overall panic of not knowing what to do first. Now that your priorities are mapped out in your planner you will either have a concise picture of how it’s all going to get done or you will recognize that the expectations you were putting on yourself (in that cray, cray headspace where you’ve been holding everything) were simply unrealistic.

Having clarity on “what you are doing when” means the time you have scheduled for your own goals can be guilt-free – and parents I’m talking to you! If you know that you have scheduled time with the kids in the diary, then you can stop lugging that ENORMOUS slab of guilt with you to your gym session or tee time!

WE ALL HAVE A SUPER POWER … MAKE PLANNING YOURS!

Make the decision and know that it is now your Super Powerif this type of “swagger” is not comfortable for you, then it might take a bit of practice. Just know that the benefits are IMMEDIATE! By planning how you use your time, you become so much more efficient. You will create more hours for yourself and your goals and finally feel like you have total control over your life and time.

6 STEPS TO HELP YOU GET THERE:

TAKE ACTION NOW.

Jump in right now instead of wasting valuable time thinking about what pursuing your goal might look like. If you take action and it doesn’t turn out exactly as you want, that tells you to move on to the next strategy – information you would never have if you stay in the “procrastination pool“(Oh yessss, it’s a thing). Stop trying to do stuff and start doing it. How do the words “I’ll try to do that” vs “I will do that” sound to you when you say them? Whichever of them you make a habit of saying becomes part of the fabric of your persona. Chose to be the person of action that “just gets it done”.

STOP MULTI-TASKING AND START FOCUSING….ONE THING AT A TIME!

Although we gals feel as though we have the whole multi-tasking thing down pat….research shows that we are truly NOT capable of doing two things well at one time (don’t know about you but, I’ve terrorized every male I know about our inherit capabilities when it comes to this skill….ughhhh). You are truly working on one thing at a time. The time wasted each time you shift your focus is lost time. Staying focused takes conscious effort, so notice your distractions and disable them. (turn off your phone ring, don’t answer Amazon delivery and try on everything you’ve ordered, don’t text, etc.) I will speak for myself here and admit that if I give just one little peek at Instagram….I’m dead meat for at least 30 minutes (IF I don’t buy anything…..). Turn off notifications and text dings as well.

GET MIKEY TO DO IT!

Get clear on those things you excel at and, where possible, delegate the rest. If you can pay someone to clean your house or do your shopping then great but, delegation does not always have to cost money. Speak to your family and explain you need time to work on your self-care and your goals and ask them to support you by helping out. Trade with a friend who does whatever it is that you need to have done…maybe they could use some of what you have as well.

TOO-BUSY BADGE NOT WELCOME HERE…

What does “I am slammed” really mean? Busy-ness is a mental thing. It refers to how much you are thinking about, not how much you are physically doing. Download all that stuff that’s making you feel busy by writing it down in a plan of action and then handle it one list item at a time. This is something I fight with all.of.the.time. I overschedule and then feel frazzled when time comes to do every.single.thing.I’ve.committed.to…..

Let’s reframe our thinking and know that if we calmly jot these action items down, we can get them done AND still have time for the fun items.

CONCLUSION OF TASK

This is “muscle memory” every time you execute this act, you get better at being someone who follows through. This, in turn, will build your confidence, and that helpcreate a habit. Get better at managing that part of your brain that is often trying to hold you back, sometimes referred to as your lizard brain, which might suggest you go and lie down instead of getting in the car and go workout. It’s more about how you manage your environment….and, once again, it takes practice and follow through!

PICK ONE REALLY, REALLY GOOD THING THAT YOU DO…

Conquer one skill set. Just one. Once you rock that goal, recognize the sensation of success and then move on to the next thing. Having too many goals might mean you won’t do any of them. Or, that you become a victim of “analysis paralysis” and don’t get anything done.
