We love to travel anyplace at any time of the year. That said, September just may be my favorite time to travel especially after the Labor Day Holiday. Now I do understand that if your kids are still at home this may be tough to pull off but there are ways to do it. And, if you are an empty nester, there are no excuses.
This is that magical shoulder season when the crowds are gone and the prices are, for the most part, lower. It is still a perfect beach time – the air is still warm and the August sun has kept the water at a nice temperature. Most International cities have emptied and hotel rates are a little more reasonable.
Here are some great beach spots and cities to consider:
- Cape Cod The weather Is almost perfect and the crowds have left – particularly on the Outer Cape and Nantucket. Consider the Chatham Bars Inn or Wequassett Inn and Golf – booth can be booked through Classic Travel for Virtuoso benefits www.classictravel.com

- Florida Particularly the Gulf Coast. The Clearwater – St Petersburg and Sarasota areas have beautiful beaches and golf courses. This is the start of Hurricane Season so plan accordingly. The Ritz Carlton Sarasota is near the vibrant St Armands Circle area. The Hyatt Regency Clearwater is directly on Clearwater Beach.

- San Diego These beaches are sandy, warm and pretty much kelp free. Hotel del Coronado is a classic hotel plus you can watch US Navy Seals training on the beach below the Hotel. www.hoteldel.com Just up the highway is the Lodge at Torrey Pines for great golf and the beach. Book through Classic Travel www.classictravel.com
Vancouver British Columbia is an easy flight from the Western US. This is a vibrant city with an eclectic atmosphere. Visit Granville Island for an amazing Public Market and great restaurants. Whistler Ski resort is an easy drive from Vancouver and has golf, mountain biking and hiking.
September is an ideal time to visit Europe, Most of the cities are much less crowded than summer and, the weather is usually cooler and the chances for rain are diminished. Consider 3 of our favorites, Paris, Venice and Istanbul. Again, Classic Travel can help you with Virtuoso reservations. Also take a look at our Wander Until found Travel Guides for an insider look at these spots.

If you are considering a little escape this time of year…..hit one of these spots and soak it up before snow hits and we all head to the mountains!
