5 THINGS YOU DON’T NEED TO CHANGE…
With a new year starting, many take time to evaluate habits and routines. But, as with everything, there are some things that just don’t need to be fixed or changed. Here are 5 things you are already doing right:
YOUR DESIRE FOR ALONE TIME
I’ve always loved having time to sit calmly at the end of the day. Or, an afternoon…or, an early morning….you get the idea. Nothing better than finishing my day of meetings, conference calls, creating content and people to sit by the fireplace and “zone”. I’ve found over the years that I am NOT at my best if I don’t take this time for me. You might feel the same way. It’s OK if I prefer to spend the night in, and I come to love this ability to steal some quiet for myself.
YOU CRAVE GENUINE CONNECTION
Research consistently shows that spending time with those you care about promotes life satisfaction. People with close ties tend to have a reduced risk of chronic disease and are in better physical and mental health. Takeaway….don’t feel guilty about prioritizing those connections over submitting one more report at work or tackling another thing on your to-do list. Take time to hang out with your kiddos or have one of those marvelous “world problem solving” sessions with a favorite gal pal.
Getting older has SO many benefits! For example, I think as we gain more experience, we feel free to wear, do, think anything we chose without that “it’s not IN….should I wear it?” Life is just too short not to do the things we love, right?! Don’t squander the daily opportunity to celebrate yourself and show the world who you are!
No better time than today to let the old FREAK FLAG fly! take up a new hobby, or get super obsessed with some strange niche of art. It’s especially important to do things for yourself that make YOU happy and result in nothing but your own HAPPINESS. I’ll binge just about any new Netflix series no matter how bizarre it may be….I dance while in the kitchen…and, I really do think I sound like Miss B when going through my latest favorite playlist. Sometimes I pick a recipe that looks waaayyyy beyond my capabilities just so I can say I did it…if it feels good, do it!!!
ANYTHING AT ALL, REALLY.
You really don’t have to change anything at all – not because you are perfect. The truth is, changing is our natural state of being. I’m studying Nutrition and it’s effects on our aging and health at Cornell. Just for the sheer pleasure of learning something new….something I am super interested in. We’re constantly creating new cells and our hair is growing and changing all of the time. Trying something new is such a luxury and it makes life so much more interesting, right?!
Do you take stock of your habits and hobbies at the beginning of each year? What things have you decided to change or start?
Keep learning. Keep smiling. Keep going.
